Effective management of cost, schedule, and technical performance requires skills and tools to manage outcomes in the face of uncertainty. Government and commercial business managers, project managers, and contracting officers need to know how to:
  • Identify sources of technical, schedule, and cost uncertainty that affect program or project success
  • Assess the probability and consequence of uncertain events or conditions
  • Model and predict the range of project or program outcomes when uncertainty is accounted for
  • Formulate effective handling and decision-making strategies to control the effects of uncertainty
Take performance management to the next level with CALIBRE's risk management training and tools for planning and estimating projects, tracking project execution, managing technical performance, and allocating resources.

Effective identification and management of project uncertainty is a key differentiator of top performers in both government and commercial environments. Risk-savvy organizations recognize that uncertainty is an inherent characteristic of complex projects and also use available tools to model and assess its effects on performance. The workshop "Risk Management: Improving Performance by Managing Uncertainty" provides the tools and techniques to address the following questions:
  • Should a modeling and simulation effort be planned for a new item, or should it proceed directly to prototype development? What is the expected value in each case?
  • How does uncertainty in an individual project task affect the project as a whole? How do multiple task uncertainties propagate through the project master schedule?
  • What cost uncertainties influence the project budget, and what is the likely range for total project cost at completion?
  • How is an appropriate management reserve established for a project?
  • From a set of potential projects, what subset is optimum in providing the best return for a given level of risk?

In this two-day workshop, the following topics will be covered:
  • The importance of identifying and managing the effects of uncertainty on project outcomes
  • The risk management process as both a systems engineering and a project management discipline
  • The use of probability distributions, decision trees, and simulation to model uncertainty
  • Managing schedule risks
  • Managing cost risks
  • Managing technical risks
  • Incorporating cost, schedule and technical risk management in an Integrated Project Team (IPT) setting
  • Managing risk across multiple projects
